Odlins Track has been affected by slips and access to Waiotauru Hut has been for two wheels only...until recently. Some generous people (4WD'ers?) have repaired around slips and cut felled tree's. So Odlins Track is open for business again.
The track is an old logging trail and was milled by Odlins. There is a lot of local history here including logging camps, roading/bridges and old logging machinery.
The track climbs to high point of 806m and if the weather allows there are number of good photo opp's...if the weather turns south it can be wet, windy and cold.
The plan is to move at a steady pace into the Waiotauru Valley and have a cuppa at the Waioutaru Hut - then check the rivers are safe to cross and to decide the plan for the day. All going well we carry onto snowy river and and the end of the track and look at side tracks on the way back...which suit Quads and are not Side by Side friendly.
Good tyres, lights, tool kits and spare clothing are key to having a good ride.
The ride has been reccied by a few riders last weekend including a Canam Outlander Max and "Brentzilla".
From Waikanae traffic lights SH1 to Reikorangi's St Andrews Anglican Church is 5km. We will meet at the parking area opposite the church on Akatarawa Road.
Soon after 08:30 we will be travel to off-street parking nearby, where we will have our briefing at 8.45am before a full day ride starting at 9:00, finishing back at parking around 4:00-5:30 pm.
We will be running to time so DON'T BE LATE
This is a moderate to difficult ride and is not suitable for all levels of riders and machinery. Predominantly Grade B, but with a few sections graded A they will will catch a few out. As a club we will make sure all riders are helped through.
Help us by bringing a winch/tow rope and be prepared to pitch in and help others get through.
Club rules and insurance stipulate all 2-up passengers must be 18 or over. For this track until the grade improves we recommend not bringing a passenger.
You Should Bring:
- Water Bottles
- Tow Rope
- First Aid Kit
- Spare Parts and Puncture Repair Kit
- Helmet and Suitable clothing for varied conditions
- Neil bring your nail clippers and track maintenance kit
